Message from the Board – Joe Watts, President

CSPOA Members often ask Board members “What is the Board’s view of the golf course and how the golf course is doing.”

The Board’s view on the golf course is that we are pleased the golf course is in our neighborhood. The course is a huge amenity and makes our property more valuable. CSPOA intends to be a good neighbor and the golf course is mutually

agreeable. We encourage Carolina Shores’ residents to support the course as it is in our community’s best interest.

In order to answer the second question, Phil shares the following information with us.

“On September 18, Carolina Shores Golf & Country Club will celebrate 45 years of being part of a wonderful community. The club helps to keep property values up; it provides open space for wildlife and provides nice views for those whose homes are adjacent to the course. The course has improved over the past years but needs more improvements. We need the support of the community to take the next step.

“We are running a special during the month of September; all residents get the guest of a member rate of $28 per player (includes cart fee, green fee and all taxes). We also offer 9- hole rates $21 per player anytime of the day, with the last tee time available at 5:00. The restaurant is open to the public; we serve a wonderful menu of delicious, affordable lunch options. We also have beer, wine and mixed drinks. If you do not play golf and want to support the club, then lunch is a nice option.

“Carolina Shores is a spectacular community, with a historical golf course in the middle of it. We hope you will put past prejudices behind you and support the view behind your home. And yes, we want you to become a member. Please call us about membership options and weekly men’s and women’s golf leagues.” - Phillipe Bureau, Carolina Shores Golf Club

Summertime Blues – Kelly Wilson

As summer has begun to wind down, we see parents and kids anxious about going back to school, picking out new clothes and supplies for the upcoming year ahead and grandparents cleaning up the remnants left from grandchildren visiting. As always, we are sad to see this time of year arrive as it leads us into the “Summertime Blues.”

The pool has been a great place to have families come and enjoy each other’s company, escape the awful heat that summer brings, meeting new people either moving here from other areas or just visiting with family and friends, and the place that has become the busiest part of the Carolina Shores community.

Sadly as summer begins to wind down, we are very fortunate to have the Carolina warmth stay longer with us here in Carolina Shores. This in turn lets us keep our summertime going a little longer than other areas. Beginning the month of September and starting the day after Labor Day we will be reducing the hours that the pool will have attendant coverage. From September 3 through the end of the month, the hours that we will have attendants working will be as follows:

Sundays through Thursdays 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. daily.

Friday and Saturdays will be 9:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m.;

the pool will remain open until 8:00 p.m. weather permitting.

Morning water aerobics have been going great and everyone wants to keep the daily workouts available into the later months. Water aerobics are Monday through Saturday mornings beginning at 9:00 a.m. and last about an hour.

We invite all members and their guests to please keep enjoying the pool as the summer begins to wind down and hope that everyone has enjoyed their visit to the pool this summer.

ACC Corner – Joe Martere, ACC Chairperson

During the months of June and July the ACC responded to 158 requests for service from members. Seven (7) vacant lots were cleaned by owners, one (1) is in the process and three (3) are to be scheduled and cleaned in the coming month. Board member, David Franklin, is in the process of receiving quotes for those areas under POA control.

Joe attended the groundbreaking of the new senior facility being constructed on Rt. 179, S.C. along with Mayor Joyce Dunn. We, along with the Town, will keep our community informed as the work progresses.

Regarding new construction within our POA, two (2) additions/garages have received approval after final inspection by the Town and the ACC. Three (3) new homes are under construction and in varying stages of completion. One new home awaits approval by the ACC upon submission of the required plans and paperwork.

Breast Cancer Awareness Month – Carolyn Bosman

Dear Carolina Shores Friends and Neighbors,

October is fast approaching − a month this Nation and its people focus on Breast Cancer Awareness by applauding the medical progress and success in breast cancer treatment, honoring and mourning those who have died from this disease, and celebrating the joy of breast cancer survivors.

There are few fortunate people in our community who have NOT been touched by this disease. It strikes without warning, totally uprooting the family, friends and loved ones of our mothers, wives, daughters, aunts, sisters, neighbors, and friends that are forced to fight this disease. Remember that MEN are also affected by this disease.

OUR MOST IMPORTANT ROLE IN THE OCTOBER BREAST CANCER AWARENESS MONTH IS SUPPORTING THOSE LESS FORTUNATE THAT LACK THE FAMILY SUPPORT AND FINANCIAL ABLILTY TO FIGHT BACK AND WIN THEIR WAR OVER BREAST CANCER.

Please help us help those in need to fight back and win the war against this disease. The Staff of Carolina Shores Golf and Country Club and a team of Carolina Shores’ golfers invite you to participate in a FUN DAY of Golf and Fellowship. Please join in to help those less fortunate. If you are not a golfer, please support us with a check made out to: “Beyond the Pink” − the cancer support group we are supporting in this fundraiser.

THE LIBRARY LAMENT– Sue O’Reilly

The Library needs a little care,

To shelve the books that we all share.

A few of us complete this task,

And these few things we kindly ask.

Do not leave old volumes here,

Only those younger than 10 year.

No large, oversized photo books,

Or gardening, golf or those for cooks.

Weeding is something we must face,

Whether in the Library or your own bookcase.

Current general fiction is great,

Popular authors we appreciate.

Classic novels in good condition,

Interesting stories of non-fiction.

Travel books to parts afar,

Mystery tales and true memoirs.

Old books from your tabletops,

Can be brought to town thrift shops.

Do not clutter up our space,

Take them to another place!

Recreation Committee – Sue O’Reilly

As the start of a new season approaches, mark these dates on your calendar.

Sunday, September 15—TRIVIA—Come and participate in another fun round of friendly competition for bragging rights to the best team knowing the most inconsequential knowledge! Gather a team of six (6) or join other neighbors to form one at the POA clubhouse at 3:00 p.m.  Water and soda are provided, but BYOB if desired and a nosh or nibble for the “sharing table”.

Friday, September 20—HAPPY HOUR—Picnic area under the pavilion—5:00 p.m. Meet and greet neighbors and new friends at an informal gathering. BYOB and something to soak it up with for the sharing table!

Sunday, October 20—FALL Fest—Celebrate the autumn season with your neighbors at the picnic area pavilion. POA will provide hot dogs, brats, sauerkraut, rolls, ketchup and mustard. BYOB and your choice of sides to go along with this outdoor grill get-together. (There might be some om-pah-ty music to set the mood!) Call the office no later than Wednesday October 16 to let us know you will attend so we can plan the food amount.

SAVE THE DATE---POA HOLIDAY PARTY

This year the POA Holiday Party will be held at the Elks Lodge 2679, 937 Carter Dr., Calabash. Due to this change of venue and limited seating capacity, there will be two (2) dates available for reservations. Each date will be limited to 130 persons. They are Friday, December 6, and Sunday, December 8. Cost will remain at $10 for each resident and $20 for a guest attending with a resident. (One guest per household only.)

**Details about when and how to reserve tickets, menu choices and time at a later date.

Garden Club Carol Filkins

After a hot summer, vacations and relaxation, September is the month when the Carolina Shores Garden Club starts its new season (September – May).

SO!

Mark your calendars for Wednesday, September 11, at 1:00 p.m. and join us at the POA clubhouse for our first meeting. The speaker will be Calvin Taltavali. He will be speaking about our native carnivorous plants: “Are Bugs Eating Your Plants or Are Your Plants Eating Your Bugs?”. He is a volunteer at the Museum of Coastal Carolina on Ocean Isle and often gives talks there.

We are always looking for new members. Please bring a friend or neighbor to enjoy this interesting program with a social time to follow. The membership dues is still $10.

Knit ‘n Natter – Diana Mardall

Did you know Carolina Shores has an evening knitting/crocheting/needlework group? We meet every other Monday at 6:30 p.m. in the POA Library. If you knit, crochet or do other needlework, stop by and join us. We’d love to see new faces.

The group meets and shares patterns and expertise. We work on a variety of projects including sweaters, cardigans, afghans, shawls, cross stitch, arm knitting (that was a blast!), etc. Usually we even have dessert!

Our meetings in September will be on the 2nd and 16th and 30th at 6.30 p.m.

If you have any questions, email me at limeylady70@gmail.com or call me at 910-575-7804.

Book Discussion Group – Susie Riggs

stack of books isolated on white backgroundThe Book Discussion Group met on Friday, August 16, in the POA library. This month’s reading selection was Love and Ruin by Paula McLain. The novel is based upon the turbulent relationship between author Ernest Hemingway and his third wife, war correspondent and author Martha Gelhorn.

Our next meeting will take place on Friday, September 20, at 10:00 a.m. in the POA clubhouse. We will discuss The Forgotten Seamstress by Liz Trenow. We will also be compiling our list of books to read for the next twelve months. Each member is asked to recommend one book for our list. The meeting will be followed by a covered dish luncheon. If you are planning to attend, please contact Pat McKay to let her know what you plan to bring. If you will be unable to attend the meeting, be sure to email Pat with the title and author of the book that you want to recommend for our reading list.

Any new or established single resident is welcome to join the group. We meet on the second Tuesday of the month at the POA clubhouse at 5:00 p.m. Each of us brings a dish to share and our own beverage.

Please join us for some very friendly conversation and excellent food. The group is looking forward to seeing you in September.

This is the month that we get to enjoy our beach and milder temperatures. Remember this past July 24-26? Well our weather will recall it for us. Great weather to enjoy outdoor activities such as tennis. Open tennis starts at 9:00 a.m. Close up view of tennis racket and ballsevery Monday, Wednesday and Friday. All POA members in good standing and their guests may join in the open tennis.

Just a reminder, open tennis now begins at 9:00 a.m. starting on Labor Day and will continue with that starting time until late May (Memorial Day). Hope to see you out there!

Care Team – Beverly Rowse

http://thumbs.dreamstime.com/z/customer-care-team-d-isolated-43443409.jpgThe Care Team now has twenty-three (23) people available to help neighbors in need when a request comes to me. If you want to be a part of this team or if you no longer want to be on the list, please let me know. When a call for help comes to me, I reach out to the members on NextDoor. I don't get very many calls for help, but people are so very grateful for the assistance they get! It really doesn't take much to volunteer. Help with a small chore at home, an occasional ride, a temporary need for dog walking, etc. is usually what is needed.

So, neighbors, continue to let me know if you need help and I'll do my best to find someone. You don't have to be on NextDoor to request help. You can call me at 919-271-3005
